About The Tech Voyager

Built on Real-World Experience — Not Theory

Hi, I’m Mike

After more than 30 years working in information technology, I created THE Tech Voyager to document what I’ve learned through real-world experience with computers, networking, security, troubleshooting, and emerging technology.

This site is built around practical experience—not theory. I share what works, what fails, and what I learn along the way.

How it all Started

It started with curiosity and a lot of trial and error — long before it ever became anything more.

Early Days

I started experimenting with technology during the dial-up era, running bulletin board systems and learning how systems worked from the ground up. It wasn’t about a career at the time— I was just trying to figure things out.

Learning by Breaking Things

Most of what I learned came from trial and error—setting things up, breaking them, and figuring out how to fix them.
That hands-on approach shaped how I still work today.

First Real Step

Eventually, I turned that curiosity into something real—launching my first hosting service and helping others get their systems online. That’s when it stopped being a hobby and started becoming useful to other people.

Real-World Experience

Over time, I worked with real environments—helping people troubleshoot issues, secure systems, and fix setups that didn’t work the way they should. That’s where the biggest lessons came from.

What Actually Works

After years of seeing what fails and what holds up, I stopped chasing complexity and focused on practical solutions that work consistently. That mindset drives everything I share now.

Today

The Tech Voyager is where I document real-world experience—guides, tools, and lessons learned from actually using technology. No fluff. Just what works.

My Commitment

How I Approach Technology

My Mission

I believe technology should work for you—not the other way around. Everything I share is based on real-world use, not theory. If it doesn’t work consistently, I don’t recommend it.

My Values

I keep things simple, honest, and practical. If something works, I’ll show you. If it doesn’t, I won’t recommend it. No overcomplicating. No guesswork. Just real solutions that actually make your tech easier to deal with.

The Week That Never Ends

📚 Published Memoir

A first-person memoir of Special Forces Assessment and Selection (SFAS), Team Week, and the lessons learned from pursuing a difficult goal.

In August 1990, Specialist Michael Johnstone arrived at Camp Mackall to attend Special Forces Assessment and Selection. Within hours, normal Army life disappeared. A roster number replaced a name. A 65-pound rucksack became a constant companion. Every day brought a new test of endurance.
