Why Watch the Alien Series This Way?

Trying to figure out the best way to watch the Alien franchise? Here’s the viewing order we chose for introducing a newer viewer to one of sci-fi horror’s most iconic series.

BLUF: If you’re introducing someone to the Alien franchise for the first time, especially a younger viewer, release order still delivers the best mix of mystery, escalation, and payoff.

There are a lot of “correct” ways to watch the Alien franchise online. Chronological order. Release order. Timeline order. Prequel-first order. Everybody has an opinion.

After revisiting the franchise and introducing it to a newer viewer, I still think this order gives the best overall experience:

  • Alien (1979)
  • Aliens (1986)
  • Alien 3 (1992)
  • Prometheus (2012)
  • Alien: Covenant (2017)

This keeps the mystery intact while allowing the world and mythology to naturally expand over time.

Start With Mystery, Not Explanations

The original Alien works because you do not fully understand what the creature is, where it came from, or what it can do. The tension comes from the unknown.

If you start with Prometheus, you immediately begin learning about the origins and philosophy behind the universe. That can still work, but it changes the tone completely.

Watching the earlier films first allows the later movies to feel like discoveries instead of explanations.

The Franchise Evolves With Each Movie

One thing I still appreciate about the Alien series is that the movies do not all feel the same.

  • Alien is survival horror
  • Aliens becomes military sci-fi action
  • Alien 3 turns darker and more isolated
  • Prometheus shifts into philosophical sci-fi
  • Alien: Covenant blends horror with creation and AI themes

The franchise grows over decades instead of simply repeating itself.

Older Movies Still Matter

If you are introducing younger viewers to older films, this series is also a good reminder that great storytelling existed long before modern CGI.

The original Alien from 1979 still creates tension better than many modern horror movies. Practical effects, sound design, pacing, and atmosphere carry the film.

Sometimes it helps to frame older movies correctly before watching them. Different era. Different pacing. Different filmmaking techniques. Once people understand that, many older films become much easier to appreciate.

Final Thoughts

There may never be one “perfect” way to watch the Alien franchise, but for first-time viewers, I still think release order delivers the best combination of mystery, escalation, and payoff.

Tomorrow night starts with Alien (1979). We’ll see how it holds up yet again.
